It might happen that you get stucked at a very long webpage, or a document, and cannot find the word or phrase you need. At some stage or another, most people can relate to this situation. It can be the case of researching your work, proofreading a text, or just trying to get an important piece of information out of a contract, but having the right search skill will save you both time and nerves.

The Universal Keyboard Shortcut You Need to Know

The most straightforward method to search for words in documents and pages is by keyboard shortcuts that can be used for almost every browser and application. On Windows and Linux PCs, press the keys Ctrl + F. For Mac, the shortcut is Command + F. What you do basically is opening a find box, which is an excellent way for you to find your way through a huge text after this.

When the search box is displayed also (usually, it is at either the top or bottom of the screen), enter the word or phrase that you want to find. What the page does is to highlight visually every instance of the word automatically and let you go to the result by clicking on the arrow keys or pressing the Enter key. And actually, it is very easy, after you have done it a few times at least.

Browser Specific Search Features

Although various browsers do have subtle variations to the basic feature, they all come with similar functionalities. This is how Chrome’s search box appears when you open it: it will show up in the upper right corner and, in addition, you will be informed about the number of occurrences on the page (e.g., “3 of 47”). The search bar in Firefox is located at the bottom; in contrast, there is not much change in Safari as it still places the search tool on the top toolbar and makes it pretty.

Also, you may want to toggle the case sensitive clicking if you are searching for something very accurat. In the place around the search box, just near the icon or checkbox, see the feature. This would be very helpful when you are looking for “Apple” the corporation, or “apple” the fruit.

Searching Within PDF Documents

The same keyboard shortcuts can be used for PDFs; however, the steps may vary depending on the PDF reader. All PDF readers, including Adobe Acrobat Reader, browser based PDF viewers, and even standalone applications, are capable of supporting the Ctrl + F (or Command + F) function, but they might also come along with advanced search options hence allowing you to search through several documents at once.

Some searches may be done in scanned PDFs if they are pictures of paper rather than real text. The usual search functions will be useless for you in such a case. For a text search operation, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software is a must. This software will turn pictures into text and that text will be searchable.

Mobile Device Search Techniques

Smartphone and tablet users are never forgotten. Mobile browser search has access by tapping on either the three dot menu icon and choosing “Find in page” or “Find on page.” Enter your word or phrase, and you will be steered from one result to another by the navigation arrows. It is true that the tools feel different from desktop searching, yet the same feature is still there.

Why This Matters for Productivity

It is amazing how a simple page search can totally change the way you read. Rather than reading through an entire article and hoping that you will recognize the information that you need, you are actually able to find it in a matter of seconds. Regardless of whether the user is a student conducting research for a paper, a professional reading through a contract, or a consumer comparing different product specifications, the digital skill of being able to quickly and easily search in a page is of great use to all of them.

When next, an avalanche of words hits you, don’t forget that Ctrl + F (or Command + F) is the only thing between you and a suffocating scroll! Just make a habit of it, and it will be just like breathing for you to use this amazing tool that exists in your digital kit.
